Engaging critically with texts

As you read the text, keep the following questions in mind. We also recommend you take notes on what you think might be some possible responses to these questions. This will help you prepare for a more in-depth discussion about the book with your colleagues and with your students. 

Not all these questions have clear cut or easy answers. If you find some of them difficult to answer, take note of what is challenging about them and discuss this with your trusted colleagues. This is an important part of professional learning!

Note that these questions were developed based on school board documents that recommend criteria and rationale when making equitable text selections.

Some history about our text selection process

The Collective Catalogue of FSL Novels for Diversity was originally in search of:

However, as this project has grown we have also updated the criteria we use to evaluate the novels read. These updates were done in collaboration with colleagues and peers in the PDSB who support staff growth towards anti-racist pedagogy, as well as through our own research. One of our "future plans" is to identify which criteria each novel does and does not meet using a met/not met chart. Critically engaging with texts is a required step in all anti-racist work!

This was the original list of selection criteria we had used.

We include this to showcase just how much development and reflection had gone into selecting texts. Equity work is not clean and simple work, and although the original checklist-style list provided simplicity, it did not capture
