Elise Gravel is well known for her cute comics that try to draw awareness to a range of social experiences and issues.
This novel is about the general experience of refugees. It is not specific to one country or experience. At the end of the novel, a range of children share their specific stories, and there is also a list of famous refugees and their stories (Madeline Albright, Bob Marley, Malala Yousafzai, Abert Einstein, Anne Frank, Luol Deng, Freddie Mercury)
Open French is not an option on the form, but that is the course I used this in.
It would be important to first make sure you assess if this book would be appropriate for your class (can you protect the wellbeing of any students who may have been refugees/ who are refugees).
Explore some specific examples of how Canada has supported / not supported refugees throughout history.
Acknowledge that not all countries offer support and why.
Have students think about humanity and human rights.
