Voyage au pays de l'enfance, L'Odeur du café, Prix Carbet de la Caraïbe, relate l'enfance heureuse d'un petit garçon auprès de Da, sa grand-mère bien-aimée, puits de sagesse, de courage et de vitalité. Le récit se présente comme un album d'instantanés où le lecteur a véritablement l'impression de voir : la maison jaune dans la chaleur de l'été de Petit-Goâve; la grande galerie que Da arrose religieusement; le petit garçon malade qui rêve d'une bicyclette rouge et de la jolie voisine; la pluie; les fourmis. Une grande sensualité parcourt ces pages d'où se dégage une enivrante odeur de café et d'enfance.
