Nous sommes en train de créer une version française de notre site web. Nous apprécions votre patience!
Dearest FSLdisrupt members,
One of the primary goals of FSLdisrupt has been to discover novels by Indigenous, Black and racialized characters for the elementary and secondary FSL classroom. Book Clubs, through participation by FSL teachers like yourselves, are how we have come to develop the collection seen on our website. We are excited to announce the launch of Book Club no. 6! Our mission is to grow our database of books written by racialized and/or Indigenous authors, and so we invite you to select and evaluate such a book that you are considering using in your FSL class. This year, we are looking to add books to our database that focus on narratives of Joy and Excellence featuring racialized and Indigenous characters.
If you would like to present at Book Club no. 6, you can purchase a book (keep your receipts!) and submit your receipt for reimbursement (up to $30 for 1 book) by March 30, 2025.
Make sure the book you select has not already been reviewed, you can review what books are already in our secondary database.
To help you with your professional evaluation of the book, you can review some of the resources that we have put together over the years to help you:
Consciousness-raising resources including professional development book recommendations, workshop slides and posters
Understanding the importance of Seeking Joy in Texts including a brief summary, posters, and English-language videos for elementary and secondary teachers with examples!
When deciding if your book is appropriate, please work with these criteria, which have been workshopped since the creation of this group.
In March, we will invite you to register to make a 2-3 min informal presentation of your professional evaluation of the book you read in person at our Book Club no. 6 session. In person sharing sessions will be held in two locations this year: In Toronto at the OMLTA Spring conference (April 4-5) and in Montreal at the AQEFLS/LWB conference (April 3-5).
Reviewing new books
Is it time to update your bookshelves with novels that are culturally relevant and responsive? Novels are a great place to begin thinking critically about your pedagogy as an anti-racist teacher. FSLdisrupt is proud to host a number of potential novels that secondary FSL teachers can use in their Core, Extended, and Immersion classes. In an effort to grow our suggested novels list we would like your recommendations and reviews! Take part by reading a book and sharing your review on its appropriateness with fellow FSL teachers in this sharing session. Check out any one of the novels on our website to see what this looks like!
