Marjane Satrapi est née en 1969 à Rasht, dans la région de Guilan, sur les bords de la mer caspienne. Iranienne, elle grandit à Téhéran où elle étudie au lycée français et aux Beaux-Arts, avant de partir à Strasbourg poursuive les Arts Déco. Dans ce premier épisode, elle retrace une partie de l'histoire de sa famille ainsi que ses dix premières années, jusqu'à la chute du régime du shah.
